Pregabalin is another popular drug marketed by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The United States’ Food and Drug Administration approved the drug the same year Neurontin came to the US. Unlike Gabapentin, the Drug Enforcement Agency regulates Pregabalin as a Schedule V drug. (1)

A group of Japanese scientists discovered Gabapentin as early as 40 years ago. Afterwards, Parke-Davis introduced it in the United States back in 2004 under the trade name Neurontin. Ever since, Parke-Davis’s parent company Pfizer considers Neurontin as one of its best selling drugs.

Uses of Pregabalin and Gabapentin

First of all, Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and an anti-epileptic medication. Hence, it can treat epilepsy as well as nerve pain from shingles by altering the neurotransmitters in the brain. Furthermore, this affects nerves in the body by regulating the electrical impulses that are sent by the brain.

On the other hand, Pregabalin, also known as Lyrica, is closely related to Gabapentin. Like the latter, it is also an anti-epileptic medication. However, Pregabalin has been proven to cure more diseases than Gabapentin. Aside from nerve pain caused by shingles, it can also treat pain that resulted from diabetes, spinal cord injury, and fibromyalgia.

Evidently, being a cure for a wider range of diseases, Pregabalin proves to be the more superior drug between the two. However, before deciding which of the two you should take, there are several variables that you should consider.

Buspar, chemically known as Buspirone, is a psychoactive drug that can treat various mental disorders. It is also an anxiolytic drug which means it can also alleviate the symptoms of anxiety disorders. However, unlike Xanax, Buspar is not from the benzodiazepine group.

Uses Of Buspar And Xanax

Some sedating properties present in Xanax can help alleviate dysfunctions in the brain. Xanax works by binding itself to the GABA receptors present in the brain of the user. The drug will then help regulate the electrical impulses that it receives from the brain.

Buspar, on the other hand, works by interacting with certain hormones in our body like serotonin and dopamine. Buspar and Xanax share many uses and properties. However, some functions are also unique to each drug. (2)

Anxiety Disorders: The FDA has permitted the use of Xanax for the treatment of General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and short-term relief of the symptoms of other types of anxiety. GAD is an excessive worry regarding two or more life circumstances for a period of six or more months.

Panic Disorders: The FDA has also approved the prescription of Xanax for the treatment of panic disorders whether or not associated with agoraphobia, or a disorder that causes a person to perceive the environment to be unsafe.

The Food and Drug Administration has advised physicians to assess whether the drug is still effective for the purpose that they prescribed it. Furthermore, they estimated that the Xanax could be effective at most four months after prescription for anxiety and 4 to 10 weeks for panic disorders. (2)

Off Label Uses Of Xanax

Off label uses, on the other hand, are uses not approved for by any regulatory body. It, however, may have been demonstrated to be effective by various testimonies or clinical studies. Gabapentin is the generic version of Neurontin that is originally designed and used to treat and prevent epileptic seizures as well as neuropathic pains caused by various diseases. This drug can be used by both adults and children. (1)

This drug works on the nervous system, altering the production and effect of GABA and glutamate, a “nerve-calming” and a “nerve-exciting” neurotransmitter respectively. The latter is believed to be responsible for the occurrence of seizures. As a result, a calming effect is induced by the drug.

It is a widely-known drug mainly because of reported effectiveness despite having a very affordable price tag.

However, it has been known to be used for other than it official purposes. For one, people suffering from a migraine are taking it to alleviate their pains. A migraine also targets nerves in the head, and taking it for this intention eases the symptoms in the same way it does for neuropathic pains.

What is Xanax?

Xanax is a very powerful drug used to treat the physiological signs of anxiety disorder, panic disorder, as well as anxiety caused by depression.

Although effective in its own right, this should not be taken in place of therapy as it is not a permanent solution. Instead, it should be used to work with therapy.

Xanax was categorized as Schedule IV drug because it was shown to have a low abuse potential compared to other drugs. What is Xanax?

Xanax is a medicine that is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression. It has the ability to act quickly on the body as compared to other drugs meant to treat the same disorders.

It contains the active ingredient alprazolam, and comes in the following dosages/brands:

Xanax tablets: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg

Xanax XR extended release tablets: 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg

Niravam orally disintegrating tablets: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg

Alprazolam Intensol liquid (concentrate): 1 mg/ml

The drug works mainly on the brain and the whole of the nervous system and encourages the production of GABA, a “nerve-calming” drug. In turn, this manner of controlling bodily hormones results in a relaxing effect.

Xanax and Overdose

As we have already mentioned, Xanax is naturally very addictive. It is also very easy to build up a tolerance, so it is not very surprising that the majority of the cases of overdose are accidental.

In fact, only 52.5 percent of deaths linked to this drug do not have documented cases of substance abuse. Those same casualties even have prescriptions for Xanax. However, there is also the possibility that patients with prescriptions have overdosed intentionally. (2)

The best thing to do is help the person seek immediate medical attention or call the necessary emergency numbers. If possible, you should be the one to contact an emergency personnel.

You must also look for signs of decreased circulation such as bluish skin which may or not be cold to touch. Make sure to report any of these and other symptoms to the responding health provider.(2)

How to Treat Xanax Overdose

Depending on how quickly the treatment is sought, the treatment may vary. What is usually done is treat the symptoms as they appear. Also, there is the option of pumping out the undissolved Xanax by inserting a tube into the stomach.
